The term “caryatid” comes from the Greek word “Karyatides,” meaning “maidens of Karyae,” a town in Laconia where woman performed religious dances in honor of Artemis.
They also represent woman from Karyae, doomed to hard labour. Caryatids have been used as architectural supports in place of columns, originated in ancient Greek architecture in the 6th century BCE
